Let’s welcome 2023! I truly hope that it is full of so much love, happiness, and delicious food!
It’s the perfect time to take a good look back at the blog’s top recipes.
So, the most cooked, baked, shared, viewed, and overall loved recipes are ALL vegetarian. This isn’t an actual surprise because about 80% of the traditional Mediterranean Greek cuisine consists of vegetarian/vegan dishes. Healthy and delicious food, my friends!
It’s not by luck that the Mediterranean Diet voted #1 Diet for 2023 and 2022 and 2021 … and it goes back six years in a row (voted by US News and World Report). There are multiple reasons why Mediterranean Diet works but the most important is that it is a lifestyle honoring real food and beneficial habits. This way of eating is realistic and can be easily followed for a lifetime. Don’t forget the food. Because the food is amazing, beyond words, and mostly vegetarian/vegan. For those who either have excluded meat from their diet or eat meat sporadically or not all.
Let’s find out together your favorite top 10 Mediterranean Diet vegetarian recipes for 2022 and cook delicious food together.
10. BRAISED GREEN BEANS – FASOLAKIA
Fasolakia dish is in constant rotation in my home. It is part of the “ladera” food category meaning that vegetables and sometimes meat are braised in olive oil and tomato. Grab a generous slice of whole wheat bread and some feta cheese and you will get a delicious meal.
9. MEDITERRANEAN CABBAGE SALAD – POLITIKI
This Mediterranean Greek cabbage salad is called Politiki (Πολίτικη in Greek) and it screams winter where I come from. Drizzling, cloudy and cold weather makes it taste even better. I really don’t know how but it does. In Greece, we love cabbage salads and we definitely know how to assemble flavorful, divine salads packed with seasonal vegetables and greens.
8. GREEK WHITE BEAN SOUP -FASOLADA
Eating fasolada is written in Greek DNA. That’s why this humble white bean soup is Greece’s National food. You thought it was souvlaki? Nope! It’s this hearty and super comfort bean soup. Follow my recipe for two versions equally tasteful and simple to make.
7. GREEK MILK PIE – GALATOPITA
To be honest, this pie is so simple that it is hardly a recipe. In a pot, boil milk, sugar, butter, semolina, add eggs, layer the phyllo sheets, and …. in the oven. See? It is that easy and so delicious. I love this traditional sweet pie and make it all the time.
6. GREEK SEMOLINA HALVA
I can tell that you like desserts and you are so right! Greek semolina halva is one of the most delicious egg and dairy-free desserts of Mediterranean Greek cuisine. It is basically a semolina pudding usually enhanced with nuts and dried fruits, soaked in hot syrup, and delightfully spiced with cinnamon. Drooling already?
5. TRADITIONAL GREEK SPINACH PIE – SPANAKOPITA
The one and only traditional Greek spinach pie, the famous Spanakopita. Tons of greens like sweet, earthy spinach leaves, herbs, tangy feta cheese encased in layers of homemade, and crispy phyllo. Insanely delicious and unquestionably healthy, this vegetarian-friendly pie is going to be your new culinary achievement. Your people will beg you to make it for them again and again.
4. GREEK ZUCCHINI PIE – SFOUGGATO
The most treasured summer pie in my home. Its tangy-savory-sweet-salty flavor will tickle your taste buds and I am pretty sure you are going to make it over and over again. Did I mention that you don’t have to open phyllo? Keep that in mind and let’s kick things off!
3. GREEK CUSTARD PIE – GALAKTOBOUREKO
You love it a little more every year. It’s the #1 dessert in the blog and I receive your glorious feedback very often. What not to like in this fine, delicate, light, and outrageously creamy custard, wrapped up by layers of thin, extra crunchy phyllo, and bathed in delicious, succulent syrup?
2. LENTIL SOUP – FAKES
You can all benefit from that speedy, no-fuss soup which is healthy and very filling. But the best part of all is that kids are crazy about it. I mean it!! It is on the weekly family menu and it can satisfy even the picky eaters. Consequently, it deserves #2 in your favorite recipes every year.
1. CHICKPEA SOUP – REVITHIA RIGANATA
Almost 124k shares! Really? A chickpea soup? Not in my wildest dreams! Believe it or not, the blog’s simplest recipe is the most popular recipe for 2022. Again. #1 for 3d year in a row! Mark my words: you have to make it. I mean so many people cannot be wrong, right?
